Salary History is OK for Setting Pay, Court Rules, by Allen Smith, J.D. of Society for Human Resource Management

Should job applicants have to reveal their previous salary? It may depend on the interpretation of state and local laws. Fresno County says basing pay on previous salary avoids inconsistency and favoritism and adds objectivity to the process. The county also says it needs to know since it pays new employees five percent more than their previous salary. Lawmakers in Massachusetts and New York City see the previous salary question as a surefire way to perpetuate pay inequality for women.

Women in Leadership Searches, by Rick Seltzer of Inside Higher Ed

Data obtained from a recruiting firm shows that women applying for academic leadership positions do better as the search progresses. Women comprised 29.5% of applicants in the first stage, but 37.5% in the sixth stage of hiring. The data also suggests the gender makeup of the recruiting team was less important than its input on diversity competent hiring practices.

Invitations to controversial conservative speakers like Charles Murray, Milo Yiannopoulos and most recently, Betsy DeVos, have intensified the highly charged debate about free speech on campus. Student protests on these mostly liberal arts campuses have been big, loud and disruptive, but conservative students say their far fewer voices have been silenced.

The Berkeley College Republicans, a student group that brought the commentator Ann Coulter to campus, say they invite speakers whose ideas they don’t necessarily agree with because it’s the only way to get their voices heard.
